From one lone wolf and a single brown bear in 1926, to over 500 animals today, the Little Rock Zoo has grown tremendously.
In its beginning, it obtained small animals through public donation and fundraising through the Arkansas Game and Fish commission. As animals came in through the years, none remained as popular as Big Arkie, the 13-foot alligator who received 3,000 viewers on his first day at the zoo.
As the only zoo in Arkansas, it serves as a primary attraction with popular events such as Boo at the Zoo. This year’s festivities run through Oct. 31.
