Basketball beginnings

On April 7, 1893, about 125 years ago, the Little Rock Clinton Park racetrack season was ending. Just as horse racing was winding down for the year, another sport was about to make its debut.

That evening, Little Rock residents would get their first glimpse of basketball. Two hundred people gathered at the YMCA (located at Fourth and Main streets) for the game.

The Little Rock team (formed the night before) took on Pine Bluff, which had been together six months. The results of the game reflected the practice gap. Pine Bluff won by a score of 70 to 9.
