War Memorial Stadium

On Sept. 18, 1948, War Memorial Stadium opened as the Arkansas Razorbacks defeated Abilene Christian by a score of 40 to 6.

Before the game, the stadium was dedicated to veterans of both world wars in a ceremony led by former Razorback standout Maurice “Footsie” Britt. Due to his incredible World War II bravery, Britt become the first person in American history to earn all the Army’s top accolades, including the Medal of Honor, while fighting in a single war.

The pre-game ceremony also featured nearly 40 high school marching bands from across the state playing the National Anthem.
