2017 Teacher of the Year Aims to Teach Student Empathy

by

Van Buren School District Spanish teacher Courtney Cochran was named the 2017 Arkansas Teacher of the Year. When asked what she tries to impart to her students, her answer was empathy.

“Being a world language teacher, (empathy) tends to be really important to us,” Cochran said. “Being able to put yourself in someone else’s shoes and understand where they’ve been can just do so much.”

Cochran says her love of teaching is driven by students. “A lot of times, they’re getting the raw end of the deal because I’m learning more from them then they learn from me,” Cochran said.
