This week marked the beginning of state high school basketball tournaments. For Marked Tree High School coach Barbara Wilburn, it meant the opportunity to chase an elusive second title. However, Wilburn isn’t leading the Lady Indians; she’s in her 19th season as head coach of the senior boys team.
“I always wanted to coach boys,” Wilburn said. “I would’ve played against boys growing up if I could have.”
A former Arkansas State and professional player, Wilburn led Marked Tree to a Class 2A championship in 2001.
“It was unbelievable,” said Wilburn. “It proved to everyone that women could coach boys.”
