A couple of years ago, a frustrated student walked up to me during summer school, burdened with the task of completing a reading project before he could qualify to graduate.
While putting the project materials together, I decided to try to make this an enjoyable experience for him. I found a comfy chair, gathered some snacks and we sat together reading a short story aloud.
As we read and discussed the story, I saw the frustration melt away and this student, who clearly struggled with reading, became so engrossed in the story that he asked to take the text home.
