"Giving Birth In America: Arkansas" spotlights our state's maternal health crisis

by Margaret Willard

Arkansas has the highest rate of maternal mortality in the nation. Every Mother Counts – a nonprofit founded by Christy Turlington Burns and focused on making pregnancy and childbirth safe, equitable and respectful for all – is raising awareness of this issue, mobilizing advocates and uplifting providers through their newest documentary, “Giving Birth in America: Arkansas.”

The short film spotlights Arkansas and follows three mothers as they grapple with mental health concerns, lack of paid leave and other challenges following birth. Their stories paint a vivid picture of the reality of the postpartum experience and the essential role of community-based support.
