Skin cancer, the most common type of cancer, is also the most preventable, according to Dr. Mark Viegas with CHI St. Vincent. Skin cancer can almost always be cured if discovered and treated early.

During Skin Cancer Awareness Month in May, Viegas encourages everyone who plans to go outdoors to use sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher, wear a hat and UV-blocking sunglasses, and limit time in the sun.

One in five Americans will develop skin cancer during their lifetimes. Viegas emphasized the importance of seeing a physician annually for an exam. Monthly self-exams are recommended.
