Listening costs no more than time and attention.
The necessary noise of righteousness – “voices of the unheard,” as Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. famously called riots – is all around us. It is their turn to speak. It is the duty of everyone else to listen.
Rather than considering which words might convey your allyship, consider listening until the words feel worthy. Prove camaraderie with patience. You won’t know all the right words in the coming days and weeks anyway; let others talk, and try to hear the unheard.
When the time comes to talk, you’ll know what to say and do.
