A new joint tech initiative called the Data Transfer Project was announced by Google, Facebook, Microsoft and Twitter. Google’s blog post detailing the project explains that the primary goal is to “transfer data directly from one service to another, without needing to download and re-upload it.”
Some project partners issued a call for others to join the effort. Due to the negative impact of recent data-sharing instances, such as Facebook’s API and the Cambridge Analytica scandal, the project aims to decrease the risks by sharing the responsibility so cloud innovation can safely transpire.
